Bodacious Badger

This Bodacious Badger has a humorous quality that we love!  Maybe its the eyes which are turquoise inlaid into red jasper. While badgers are fierce, we wonder if this one uses humor to diffuse situations. The nose, mouth, paws, and line down its back are well detailed.  It has a very small signature on the bottom which we can't make out and don't know who carved it.  More about badgers below.

In the Zuni tradition badgers are the guardians of the south which is associated with new beginnings.  Badgers are diligent and fierce; you would not want to mess with one!  They are creatures of both the world underground where their dens are, and the world on Mother Earth’s belly where they hunt.  

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
