We love jewelry with birds! This sterling silver ring by Sammy Guardian has an humminbird in flight. One flower is red coral, the other is Sleeping Beauty turquoise and gold lip mother of pearl. The stalks and leaves are green stone, maybe turquoise? The hummingbird is made of abalone, pink mussel shell and jet. The band is split into three segments on each side and soldered onto the front. Price reduced from $120 to $90.
Hummingbirds are fierce defenders of their families. Many Indigenous people consider them to be messengers between this world and the spirit world. And, in some tribes they are considered to be “love medicine”.
This type of Zuni inlay is made by sawing out two pieces of silver into the desired shape. The area where the stones are inlaid are sawn out by hand (yes, really!). The two pieces of silver are then soldered together. The stones are then cut, shaped and polished into the areas that have been sawn out to create the design. This type of jewelry making is very difficult and involved, which is why we don't see too many jewelers making it anymore.
