Thunderbirds are powerfully intelligent forces of nature that many Indigenous people have relationships with. They make their presence known with the bang of thunder and thunder clouds. Once, driving to Santa Fe, the owner of Gathering Tribes and her husband saw a cloud near Kewa Pueblo that was shaped exactly like a Thunderbird. Unfortunately, it was before cell phones had cameras so they did not get a photo.
This necklace with matching earrings was made by Zuni jeweler, Adrian Wallace. The inlaid stones are natural Sleeping Beauty turquoise, natural red coral, jet, mother of pearl, and gold lip mother of pearl. Each shape is sawed by hand, the each bezel shaped and soldered onto the bottom. The stones are cut to exactly fit. What a meaningful and spectacular piece of jewelry.
