This clean Hopi overlay pendant was made by Trinidad Lucas. She placed a butterfly with many weather elements: water, a whirlwind, a prayer feather and clouds. Hopi jewelry has nice clean and graceful lines that are both appealing and soothing. The bale fits a delicate to medium size chain. It is stamped on the back with Trinidad's hallmark, which is a bear. She is from the Hopi bear clan of Mishongovi village. Come with a delicate 18" sterling silver chain. More on how overlay jewelry is made below.
Size: 2" L x .75" W
Overlay jewelry is made by sawing out two sheets of sterling silver the same size. Hopi jewelers texture the bottom sheet with hatch marks. It is then oxidized to turn it black. The design is drawn on to the top sheet of silver which is then carefully sawed out with a fine jeweler's saw. The edges are filed smooth. The top piece is soldered on to the bottom piece. Sometimes, there are many small pieces that are also soldered on to the bottom sheet of silver as in the body of the butterfly in this pendant. It is then polished to a high sheen.
