Altar Doll and Baby

We love the altar dolls made by Marvelita Phillips.  This one is holding a baby with inlaid turquoise eyes and mouth.  The offering bundle has white beads that wrap around the baby with two turquoise beads in front and encrusted crushed turquoise all the way around, with a feather on each side of the baby.  The dolls are carved from antler.

This a very traditional style of carving from Zuni Pueblo.

Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal.   Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.
