The Kokopelli figure is on petroglyphs from Utah to Northern Mexico. He is thought to be a merchant trader who walked from village to village with his bag of treasures on his back - thus the humped back. He is almost always depicted playing a flute, and it is thought that perhaps he played his flute upon arriving to the next village. Since he would have news of other places, there would be a feast when he arrived. And, like the stories of more modern day traveling salesman, although these are old stories now with the internet, there may have been young women ready to give birth nine months later. So, Kokopelli is also associated with fertility.
